What is the Surround Sound Test?
Our surround sound test is a diagnostic tool designed to verify the correct configuration of your multi-speaker audio system. Whether you have a 5.1 home theater setup, a 7.1 gaming headset, or a standard stereo configuration, this tool allows you to isolate and test each individual audio channel. By using the Web Audio API's spatial panning capabilities, we can send discrete audio signals to specific speaker positions, allowing you to confirm that each speaker is wired correctly and positioned in the right place.
How to Use the Test
The visualizer represents a top-down view of your room, with you positioned in the center. Click on any of the speaker icons (Front Left, Center, Front Right, Surround Right, Surround Left) to play a continuous 440Hz test tone through that specific channel. Alternatively, use the 'Auto Sweep' function to automatically cycle the sound through all connected speakers in a clockwise sequence. If you click 'Surround Left' but the sound comes from your front-right speaker, your system is wired incorrectly.
Troubleshooting Surround Sound
If all sounds seem to come from your front speakers (or just your headphones), your operating system or browser might not be configured for surround sound. In Windows, right-click the speaker icon in your taskbar, select 'Sounds', click the 'Playback' tab, select your audio device, and click 'Configure'. Ensure your setup is set to '5.1 Surround' or '7.1 Surround' rather than 'Stereo'. Additionally, some browsers require specific flags to be enabled for advanced spatial audio to function correctly.
