How to use: In the Calibration Chart, look for the gamma value where the dithered (checkerboard) top half blends perfectly with the solid gray bottom half. If γ 2.2 blends perfectly, your monitor is calibrated to the standard sRGB gamma. Most monitors should aim for 2.2.
What is Display Gamma?
Gamma describes the relationship between the numerical value of a pixel and its actual brightness on screen. It is a power curve that determines how your monitor distributes tones across the range from black to white. The standard gamma for most displays and content is 2.2 (the sRGB standard). If your gamma is too low, images appear washed out. If it is too high, images appear too dark with crushed shadows. Regular diagnostic verification ensures that your hardware operates at peak factory specifications and delivers reliable performance across gaming and professional tasks.
How the Calibration Chart Works
Each column in our calibration chart has two halves. The top half is a dithered checkerboard of alternating black and white pixels. When viewed from a normal distance, your eyes blend these into a perceived 50% gray. The bottom half is a solid gray mathematically calculated for each specific gamma value. When the two halves match perfectly (appear identical), that gamma value matches your monitor's actual gamma curve. Utilizing standardized browser benchmarks eliminates the guesswork from troubleshooting, giving you real-time data to optimize your setup without third-party software.
How to Adjust Gamma
Most monitors do not have a direct 'Gamma' slider in their OSD menu. Instead, gamma is typically adjusted through your GPU's display settings (NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Radeon Settings, or Intel Graphics). Some monitors offer gamma presets (e.g., Gamma 1, 2, 3). For photo and video editing, a hardware colorimeter with profiling software (like DisplayCAL) provides the most accurate gamma calibration.
