What is Screen Resolution?

Screen resolution refers to the number of pixels (individual dots of color) that make up the image on your display, expressed as width × height. Higher resolutions contain more pixels, resulting in sharper, more detailed images and more screen real estate for your windows and applications.

Common Display Resolutions

Monitors and laptops typically come in a few standard resolutions:

  • FHD / 1080p (1920×1080): The standard for most budget monitors and laptops. It provides a decent balance of performance and clarity.
  • QHD / 1440p (2560×1440): The sweet spot for gamers and professionals, offering significantly sharper text and more workspace than 1080p without being as demanding as 4K.
  • 4K UHD (3840×2160): Extremely high pixel density, perfect for reading text, editing high-resolution photos, or watching 4K movies. It requires OS scaling (e.g., 150% or 200%) on standard-sized monitors to make text legible.

Native Resolution vs Viewport Resolution

Your Native Screen Resolution is the absolute physical number of pixels built into your monitor hardware. Your Viewport Size (or CSS Resolution) is the size your operating system tells your web browser you have. When you use Display Scaling in Windows or macOS (e.g., setting scaling to 150%), your OS artificially lowers your CSS resolution so that text and UI elements appear larger and easier to read. What is the 1:1 Pixel Mapping test?

Our 1:1 pixel mapping checker displays an ultra-fine 1x1 alternating pixel checkerboard. If your display is running at exactly 100% scaling and native resolution, the pixels will map perfectly to your physical screen, creating a perfectly uniform gray image. If the operating system or monitor is scaling the image (DPR > 100%), the browser must guess how to render 1 virtual pixel across 1.5 or 2 physical pixels, resulting in messy scaling artifacts, blurring, or severe moiré patterns.
